Alberta Energy Regulator approves Gina Rinehart-backed Grassy Mountain coal project
The mine, originally closed in 1983, has the capacity to produce 4.5 million tonnes of steelmaking coal annually and spans 2,800 hectares.
www.mining.comGina Rinehart's Hancock Prospecting has a connection to the Grassy Mountain coal project in Alberta, which was approved by the Alberta Energy Regulator in 2021 for exploration and mining activities. The project also obtained a temporary diversion license. The mine is expected to produce approximately 4.4 million tonnes of steelmaking coal every year on around 2,700 hectares of land. This project has its roots in Northback Holdings, which was previously known as Riversdale/RBaenga Mining, and has had to navigate through regulatory challenges, including a 2021 Alberta review.
