HOUSTON (AP) — Amen Thompson poured in a season-high 27 points, while Alperen Şengün contributed 26 points and 11 rebounds as the Houston Rockets edged out the Dallas Mavericks 110-102 on Monday night.
The Rockets have rebounded from early struggles, now winning four straight games after starting the season 0-2.
With about 90 seconds left, Houston led by only one point when Şengün drove hard to the basket, spun around a defender, and scored to make it 105-102. After a missed three-pointer by Washington, Josh Okogie hit two free throws, extending the lead to 107-102 with one minute remaining.
D’Angelo Russell missed a three-point attempt, and Thompson made one of two free throws to push Houston ahead 108-102 with 27 seconds left. Thompson also blocked a three-point shot by No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg, and Tari Eason sealed the victory with a dunk.
Washington led Dallas with season highs of 29 points and 12 rebounds in their second consecutive game without Anthony Davis, sidelined due to a strained calf. Max Christie scored 17 points, and Cooper Flagg added 12 points and five rebounds as the Mavericks dropped to 2-5.
Kevin Durant ended the night with 21 points, six rebounds, and five assists despite shooting 6 of 18 from the floor. The Rockets barely held a one-point lead until Durant made his first three-pointer of the game after missing six attempts. Daniel Gafford responded with a layup before Durant nailed another three to push the lead to 99-94 with five minutes remaining.
