FOLSOM – Officials from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) are investigating an incident at California State Prison, Sacramento (SAC), that is being treated as an attempted homicide involving two peace officers.
On January 1, 2025, around 7 p.m., incarcerated individual Jason Brannigan, 48, allegedly attacked two officers with an improvised weapon while being escorted from his cell for a routine search.
Responding staff used physical force and chemical agents to subdue the attack, recovering the improvised weapon at the scene. Both officers were taken to the prison’s triage area and then transferred to an outside medical facility, where they were admitted and reported to be in fair condition.
Brannigan has been placed in restricted housing pending further investigation. The case will be referred to the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office for potential felony prosecution.
The institution remains under modified programming to conduct a 24-hour threat assessment. Employee support services, including peer counseling, are available to assist staff affected by the incident.
