Roque Brace Strengthens Palmeiras Title Charge

SAO PAULO, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) — Vitor Roque scored twice in the second half as Palmeiras widened its lead at the top of Brazil’s Serie A with a 2-0 home victory over Santos on Thursday.

The breakthrough came in the 67th minute at Allianz Parque when Roque ran onto Juan Manuel Lopez’s pass, rounded goalkeeper Gabriel Brazao, and calmly finished into an empty net. Ten minutes from time, the former Barcelona forward struck again, chipping the ball over Brazao after a precise pass from Rafael Veiga.

The win put Palmeiras on 68 points, three clear of second-placed Flamengo, with both clubs having seven matches left in the season.

“In the first half we weren't able to translate our dominance into goals,” Palmeiras manager Abel Ferreira said. “But that changed after halftime. With the changes that we made, we had great energy and looked to score at every opportunity. It's a deserved victory.”
