Michael Giacchino Scrapped And Rewrote ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps’ Score Before It Hit Cinemas – Sound & Screen Film

Michael Giacchino Rewrites Score for ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps’

The score for Fantastic Four: First Steps, Michael Giacchino’s seventh for Marvel, was fully scrapped and rewritten before the film’s release, according to the composer.

Background of Giacchino’s Work on Marvel

Development of the Score

During a panel at Deadline’s Sound & Screen: Film event, Giacchino explained that he initially created two complete scores, but the one used in the final cut was different from the original.

“I actually wrote a whole other score for this film that you probably won’t ever hear,” Giacchino said. “I just remember seeing it for the first time with the music and something didn’t feel right.”

Creative Process and Final Changes

Giacchino composed much of the initial score before principal photography started. Director Matt Shakman incorporated Giacchino’s themes into the filming process, helping shape the final product.

He emphasized the importance of hiring a composer early so that everyone can align their vision from the start:

“It was helpful to them to figure out oh, that’s the movie we’re making. I think anyone who’s making movies should hire the composer first and then have them write their suite because then they can all get on the same page on day 1.”

Reaction to Final Cut

After viewing the completed film, Giacchino felt that his music no longer fit with the final version, leading to significant revisions.

Author's summary

Giacchino’s score for Fantastic Four: First Steps was entirely rewritten after initial composition, reflecting the evolving nature of film scoring and the director’s final cut considerations.
