Channel 9’s chief footy reporter, Tom Morris, has made a surprising move by switching to rival network Channel 7. The 34-year-old informed Channel 9 on Friday morning that he accepted a lucrative offer from Channel 7.
According to Code Sports, Seven’s head of sport, Chris Jones, and SEN chief Craig Hutchison led the successful recruitment, adding Morris to an already impressive line-up of footy talent.
Morris is not expected to take a leading on-air role, as Mitch Cleary remains Channel 7’s chief footy reporter. Alongside Cleary and Xander McGuire, another recent recruit from Nine, they will form a strong commentary team.
This move is part of Seven’s recent string of major signings, including luring Kane Cornes from Nine ahead of the 2024 AFL season. Morris reportedly chose Channel 7 due to its broadcast rights to both football and cricket. He had been with Channel 9 since January 2024.
