Although Alberta’s fire season officially ends on Friday, dry and windy weather in the province's south has led to new fire advisories, particularly in Rocky View County.
The advisory covers both the east and west sides of Rocky View County, with conditions creating a moderate fire risk, according to the county’s website.
"This is definitely a period of season where honestly the weather can change very rapidly," said Rocky View County Deputy Fire Chief Bill Messner.
Messner noted the dry conditions have caused a rise in grass fires over the past week, including up to three fires in a single day.
"Some of those might be human-caused, such as from lit cigarettes being tossed. Please use the proper receptacles. Please don't flick them out of the window. That definitely can cause a lot of issues that way," he added.
The county has imposed a fire ban, suspending permits for fireworks and outdoor burns. However, exceptions remain for barbecues, camp stoves, and indoor fireplaces.
Deputy Fire Chief Messner expects the advisory to remain in effect for at least another week due to ongoing dry weather, though no specific end date has been announced.
"There is no word on when the advisory might be lifted," Messner said.
Summary: Rocky View County faces a moderate fire risk due to persistent dryness, prompting advisories and bans while officials urge caution to prevent human-caused fires.
