Lindsay Sandiford, 69, arrived back in the UK on November 7 after being released on humanitarian grounds from Indonesia, where she was sentenced to death for smuggling $2.14 million worth of cocaine.
Sandiford was convicted in 2013 on the Indonesian island of Bali, which is known for its strict drug laws. Despite this, Indonesia has recently released several high-profile detainees. Sandiford’s release marks one of these humanitarian cases.
Upon arrival at Heathrow’s Terminal 4, Sandiford was escorted by security staff in a wheelchair, covering her face with a jacket and remaining silent.
“Two British nationals who were detained in Indonesia have now returned to the UK,” said a spokesperson for the British Foreign Office.
Lindsay Sandiford’s release and return to the UK after being sentenced to death in Indonesia highlights a rare humanitarian reprieve amid the country's strict drug laws.
