As a nationwide travel crisis worsens during the ongoing government shutdown, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is set to leave Washington to attend a campaign event for his son-in-law in Wisconsin.
Michael Alfonso, Duffy’s son-in-law, is hosting a meet-and-greet in Wausau, Wisconsin, on Tuesday, which coincides with Veterans Day, a federal holiday. The morning event will include coffee and pastries and serve as part of Alfonso’s congressional campaign.
Several individuals close to President Donald Trump have expressed frustration over Duffy’s trip, noting that he reportedly did not coordinate his plans with the White House.
One source close to the White House called the decision “a world-class stupid decision.”
“While our airports are in chaos, the Transportation Secretary is flying to a campaign fundraiser for his son-in-law,” observed liberal commentator Ron Filipkowski on X.
A spokesperson for the Transportation Department told the Daily Mail that Duffy is attending the event in a personal capacity, emphasizing that his presence “does not reflect any official administration position or endorsement.”
Criticism grows over Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy’s decision to attend a family fundraiser during nationwide travel disruptions, raising questions about timing and priorities.
