James A. Garfield and His Assassin in "Death by Lightning"

Mike Makowsky spent months securing government permission to access authentic materials, which explains why his new Netflix limited series, Death by Lightning, starts with a detailed re-creation of historical events.

This recently released four-part series narrates the intertwined stories of James A. Garfield, the 20th president of the United States, and his assassin, Charles J. Guiteau. Garfield’s home in Mentor is now preserved as the James A. Garfield National Historic Site, managed by the National Park Service.

In 1881, Guiteau assassinated Garfield, abruptly ending his presidency. The series dramatizes these events, featuring Michael Shannon as Garfield, a man of principle, and Matthew Macfadyen portraying the disturbed Guiteau.

Makowsky adapted the show from Candice Millard’s acclaimed 2011 book, Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President.

"Death by Lightning," begins with a re-creation of Charles J. Guiteau’s assassination of President Garfield.
Michael Shannon stars as the principled Garfield, and Matthew Macfadyen as the deranged Guiteau.

Author’s Summary: The series 'Death by Lightning' vividly retells the tragic story of President Garfield and his assassin, blending historical accuracy with compelling performances.
