UN Security Council Votes to Lift Sanctions on Syrian President

The United Nations Security Council approved a US resolution on Thursday to remove sanctions from Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa prior to his upcoming visit to the White House.

The resolution, endorsed by 14 council members, states:

"(The Council) decides that Ahmed al-Sharaa...and (Interior Minister) Anas Hasan Khattab are delisted from the ISIL and Al-Qaida Sanctions List."

The lifting of sanctions is largely symbolic because they had routinely been waived during Sharaa’s travel for official duties. Alongside this, an assets freeze and arms embargo will also be lifted.

The decision was welcomed by Syria. Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani expressed gratitude on social media platform X:

"Syria expresses its appreciation to the United States and to friendly nations for their support of Syria and its people."

US President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet Sharaa on November 10, citing that the Syrian leader has made "good progress" in advancing peace in the country's conflict-ridden landscape.

Summary: The UN Security Council’s removal of sanctions on Syrian President Sharaa ahead of his White House visit marks a diplomatic gesture acknowledging progress toward peace in Syria.
