"Past Lives" by Jay Som featuring Hayley Williams
Jay Som is the musical project of Melina Duterte, a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer. Her new album, Belong, was released on November 7. Ahead of the album, she shared the single "Past Lives," featuring Hayley Williams of Paramore.
The collaboration came together in Nashville with Steph Marziano. Williams’ gentle harmonies on the sweeping track "Past Lives" enhance its melancholic mood, reflecting moments of lost momentum and emotional struggle. The song's dynamic midsection hits with intense self-conflict.
“It’s a dream come true to have Hayley sing on my first feature on an album before the recording of ‘Float,’ I still can’t believe it happened,” Duterte shared. “She’s one of the kindest artists out there and she graciously accepts and uplifts the people around her. We’re all so lucky to witness her talent and live on the same timeline as her.”
The Belong album features contributions from Joao Gonzalez (Soft Glas), Mal Hauser (Mk.gee, Illuminati Hotties), Steph Marziano (producer for Vundabar, Hot Wax, Sir Chloe), and Kyle Pulley. For the first time, Jay Som welcomed guest vocalists on the record.
