North Melbourne moved within two victories of an unbeaten AFLW season after overpowering Hawthorn in Friday night’s qualifying final at Ikon Park, Carlton. Despite a scattered attack, the Roos controlled the field and handled injuries better than their gallant but outclassed opponents before 4392 supporters.
Their undefeated run, stretching from last season, has now reached 25 consecutive matches. The scoreboard read 5.12 (42) to 0.3 (3) in favor of North. The team will rest next week, while the Hawks face recovery worries ahead of their elimination semi-final.
“That’s probably one area we’ll look at. Their ability to not just defend inside the defensive 50m arc, but also to pressure the ball carrier — sometimes the ball carrier was under pressure and they couldn’t get the ball into the areas they wanted to. We could have been a little better with where we put the ball at times.”
Coach Darren Crocker praised his players’ composure but admitted the side needed sharper forward play after missing several conversion chances.
These four led a solid all-round team effort, while for Hawthorn, Eliza West, Laura Stone, Tilly Lucas-Rodd, and Aileen Gilroy stood out as their best contributors.
Kaitlyn Ashmore suffered a calf injury and did not return for the final quarter. Aine McDonagh battled through an apparent knee issue but managed to stay on the field.
North Melbourne advanced to the AFLW preliminary final after dominating Hawthorn, extending their unbeaten streak to 25 games with a display of composure and control.
