Once a chorus pig on "The Muppet Show," Miss Piggy is now set to become the star of her own Disney film. Golden Globe winner Jennifer Lawrence announced she is co-producing the movie alongside Oscar-winning actress Emma Stone.
Lawrence revealed the news during an interview on the Las Culturistas Podcast, stating,
“I don’t know if I can announce this, but I’m just gonna. Emma Stone and I are producing a Miss Piggy movie.”
The script is being written by Cole Escola, known for the Broadway comedy Oh, Mary! When asked if she and Stone would act in the film, Lawrence said,
“I think so,”
adding it was surprising they hadn’t appeared in a movie together before.
Lawrence explained the idea began during the pandemic lockdown amid the height of cancel culture. On The Tonight Show, she shared a conversation with Stone:
“She said, ‘Miss Piggy is a feminist icon. It would be so funny if Miss Piggy got canceled.’”
Although this is not the actual plot, the comment sparked the project’s development.
Originally a chorus pig on the 1970s "The Muppet Show," Miss Piggy grew into a leading character by the late 1970s and early 1980s. She is also famously known for her tumultuous relationship with Kermit the Frog.
Author's summary: Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone are producing a Disney movie starring Miss Piggy, inspired by her status as a feminist icon and conceived during the pandemic's cultural moment.
