Mark Parton Calls for Unity as New Canberra Liberals Leader
Former radio host and moderate Liberal Mark Parton was unanimously elected as the new leader of the Canberra Liberals, following Leanne Castley’s resignation as opposition leader and Jeremy Hanson’s departure as deputy. Parton also resigned from his position as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly to assume leadership.
"I've been placed in this position as a unifier, and unify is what I will do," said Mark Parton.
His appointment follows weeks of internal party upheaval, including the suspension of two members by Leanne Castley, which sparked leadership resignations. Parton positioned himself as a figure determined to move the party past internal strife.
"It’s time for the Canberra Liberals to leave the past behind," he stated, urging colleagues to focus on unity and future elections.
Parton emphasized that he is weary of discussions about internal divisions, noting that voters are more concerned with real community issues. He expressed his intent to steer all nine parliamentary members toward a common political goal.
"I’m absolutely sick to death of having conversations about internal party matters, because people in the suburbs are not having those conversations," he said.
He underscored his commitment to bring together both sides of the party’s ideological spectrum, acknowledging that past divisions between left and right have weakened their effectiveness in opposition.
"In the past, my party has been divided... often separated by a line between the left and the right," Parton noted.
He concluded by describing his election as a moment of great honour and responsibility, vowing to focus on rebuilding trust and preparing for the next election cycle.
