Josh Hutcherson joined Rachel Sennott’s HBO comedy “I Love LA” later in production, stepping in after the pilot was already filmed. Despite the late entry, he worked closely with Sennott and co-showrunner Emma Barrie to reshape his character, Dylan — the longtime partner of Sennott’s Maia — adding new layers to his personality and motivations.
“We very quickly all got on the same page, which was we didn’t want Dylan to just be the square, the boring, nothing guy,” Hutcherson told TheWrap. “We wanted to find some textures to him that felt funny and dynamic and different, rather than something that we’ve seen before.”
The creative team focused on understanding Dylan’s core identity, exploring his desires and reasons for being with Maia. This collaboration helped expand the role from its original version, previously portrayed by Miles Robbins in the pilot episode.
The HBO comedy follows the complicated lives of couples navigating modern relationships in Los Angeles, blending humor with moments of sincerity and self-discovery.
Author’s summary: Hutcherson reinvented his role in “I Love LA,” turning a simple character into a more lively and distinct portrayal through collaboration and creative freedom.
