Queensland’s Cross Border Commissioner and former police union leader Ian Leavers has passed away unexpectedly, prompting an outpouring of tributes.
Mr. Leavers was known as a prominent and influential figure in Queensland’s police community. He served as a long-time president of the state’s police union, advocating tirelessly for the welfare and safety of police officers.
“He left a strong contribution first as a member of the Queensland Police and later as President of the Queensland Police Union,”
Premier David Crisafulli honored the 58-year-old as a “dedicated, principled and driven” leader who earned widespread respect.
“Queenslanders will remember his leadership during some our State’s most tragic and defining events,”
“As Queensland’s first Cross-Border Commissioner, Mr Leavers has been a strong voice for the challenges facing communities and businesses along the State’s borders during a critical stage of rebuilding following the impact of the COVID pandemic.”
Throughout his career, Mr. Leavers championed safer working conditions for police and fought for proper resources and support. The Premier extended sympathy on behalf of all Queenslanders to Ian’s family and friends.
