Hospital Clínic Presents a Casebook to Promote Bioethics Culture

The book For a Bioethics Culture. Casebook 2010–2021 was launched at the Barcelona College of Physicians. It compiles 16 real cases deliberated by the Clinical Ethics Committee of Hospital Clínic from 2010 to 2021.

About the Book and Event

The volume was prepared by the Clinical Ethics Committee of Hospital Clínic and edited in collaboration with the Chair of Legal Medicine, Professional Responsibility and Clinical Safety of the University of Barcelona, alongside the Barcelona College of Physicians (CoMB).

The presentation took place in the Assembly Hall of the Barcelona College of Physicians and included speeches from key figures:

Josep Arimany, Director of the Practice Area at CoMB
Josep Maria Campistol, General Director of the Clínic
Ferran Masanés, President of both the Clínic’s Clinical Ethics Committee and CoMB’s Research Ethics Committee
Magda Campins, President of CoMB’s Deontology Commission

Contents and Structure

Coordinated by Ferran Masanés and Ferran Céspedes, former secretary of the Clinical Ethics Committee, the casebook presents ethical dilemmas encountered in clinical practice during the eleven years.

Each case includes:

A clinical summary
The ethical dilemma involved
The bioethical reasoning applied
The committee’s final recommendations

For over a decade, these cases illustrate the complex ethical decisions faced by healthcare professionals.

The book aims to foster a stronger bioethics culture among medical professionals by sharing real-life experiences and ethical analyses.
