More than 500 runners took part in the third annual Naples Airport Runway races, which featured both a 5K and, for the first time, a 10K event. The participants raised funds to support scholarships for local youth.
The proceeds from the races will be divided between two nonprofit organizations: Gulf Coast Runners and the Experimental Aircraft Association. Gulf Coast Runners awards scholarships to teenagers pursuing college or trade school education. Meanwhile, the Experimental Aircraft Association provides scholarships for aspiring pilots, aircraft mechanics, and engineers.
“For years, people talked about being able to do a 5K or 10K race on an open runway, and we had it come to fruition a few years ago with the Naples Airport Authority,” said Mitch Norgart, president of Gulf Coast Runners. “It’s a novelty to be able to run on a straight, mile-long runway, and I think we’ll keep going with this one.”
