Sacramento State's men's basketball team is off to a 2-0 start this season, playing before packed crowds at the new Hornet Pavilion. Despite the strong start, first-year head coach Mike Bibby remains critical and focused on improvement.
Mike Bibby, previously known for his playmaking skills with the Sacramento Kings, emphasizes fundamentals and teamwork over individual efforts. After a recent 86-76 victory against Division II Jessup University, he held a frank team meeting stressing the need to break “bad habits.”
“Very disappointed. Just paying attention to detail. The kids are making the game so hard, harder than it needs to be. Then we come out here and look like we haven’t been doing anything.”
Bibby urged his players to eliminate the “me, me, me” mindset, highlighting the importance of ball movement and stronger defensive effort to reach their full potential.
“Until we stop being ‘me, me, me,’ we’re not going to be a good team.”
Coach Bibby believes the team’s talent and dedication could lead to a historic season, despite integrating fourteen new players striving to gel quickly.
Although off to a perfect start, Sac State's coach Mike Bibby demands more selflessness and focus on fundamentals as his young team adapts and aims for greater success.
