John Bell, 44, who was accused of sexually assaulting an eight-year-old boy at a campsite near Loch Ness, died while in custody at HMP Inverness on Saturday, November 8, 2025.
The alleged assault occurred in July 2025 when the child was approached inside his tent at the campsite. The boy's parents were camping nearby, and his father was awakened by the child's distress, later noticing someone fleeing the scene.
After an extensive police investigation, Bell from Grangemouth was traced and charged in September. At his court appearance at Inverness Sheriff Court, he made no plea. The case has been sent for further examination, with Bell held on remand.
Police Scotland has been informed of Bell’s death. A Fatal Accident Inquiry (FAI) is planned to examine the circumstances. A Scottish Prison Service spokesperson stated:
Every death, whether in prison custody or in our communities, is a tragedy for all those who knew and supported the individual. Following the death of someone in our care, Police Scotland are advised, and the matter reported to the Procurator Fiscal.
The case caused significant concern in the local community and resulted in heightened police presence and investigation at the Loch Ness campsite.
