In October, Adelaide's vibrant music scene delivered standout releases from artists like Maybe Hugo, Sunsick Daisy, and Gratts. Among them, the experimental trio Dovize explores improvisation with their track "Kickin’ Sand" from their debut EP.
The song features a saxophone taking a leading role, almost as if it has a will of its own. Meanwhile, a post-punk inspired guitar riff introduces a motif that other instruments echo throughout the track. Dovize is the brainchild of Sean Desmon and includes Sean Blackwell on bass, Doyle Holmes on drums, and Vittorio on saxophone.
The track "Pretty Lights" stands out for its fusion of drum and bass with psychedelic influences. It opens with an effect-heavy piano, followed by R&B-style vocals and brisk drumming. At 2:27 minutes, a gritty synth-bass line takes the lead, before an 80s-inspired synth riff energizes the track at 3:51.
"Pretty Lights" appears on the Pretty Lights/Euphoria EP. DJ and producer Gratts explained his collaboration process:
“First up, local jazz force Grace Mensforth dove into the studio with Jake Amy, Dylan Paul, and Miles Farnan to bring a thrilling liquid drum and bass take on ‘Pretty Lights’.”
CityMag’s regular contributor JesseMelancholy also returns to the column this month with the track "silver sky."
