Graham Norton, Ian McKellen, and Armistead Maupin are among the featured guests attending the new festival in the Scottish Highlands this January.
In addition to hosting the popular show The Traitors and running his own New York cabaret club, Club Cumming, Alan Cumming was named artistic director of the Pitlochry Festival Theatre in Scotland in 2024. He began this role earlier this year and is preparing to launch his first programming in early 2026.
One of Cumming’s first major projects will be a new LGBTQ+ arts festival called Out In The Hills, designed to showcase queer theatrical life outside the usual summer Pride season. The festival is set to run from January 16–18, 2026.
The Pitlochry Festival Theatre is located in Perthshire’s Highlands, about a two-hour drive north of Edinburgh. Sitting beside the River Tummel, it overlooks scenic views of Ben-y-Vrackie, also known as the ‘Speckled Mountain.’ Though the Highlands are chilly in winter, the spectacular landscape offers a stunning backdrop year-round.
"Out In The Hills offers a unique opportunity to experience theatrical queer life away from the summer Pride season."
This intimate festival promises to blend culture, stunning nature, and queer storytelling in a fresh, winter setting.
Author’s summary: Alan Cumming is launching an intimate LGBTQ+ arts festival in the Scottish Highlands, combining queer theatre and breathtaking winter landscapes.
