LIVE: ICC ruling on Rodrigo Duterte's drug war

The International Criminal Court (ICC) is set to deliver its ruling on the complaint filed against Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte over his administration's war on drugs.

A group of petitioners, led by Amnesty International Philippines, filed a complaint against Duterte and other government officials in 2018, accusing them of crimes against humanity, including murder, torture, and other inhumane acts.

The ICC has been investigating the complaint for over three years, and the court's Pre-Trial Chamber II is expected to deliver its ruling on the matter today.

The ruling could have significant implications for Duterte and his administration, potentially leading to international arrest warrants and other consequences.

“The Philippines' failure to investigate and prosecute crimes against humanity committed during the 'war on drugs' is a clear indication of the country's failure to uphold its international obligations,” said Agnes Callamard, Amnesty International's Secretary General.

According to the petitioners, the Duterte administration's war on drugs has resulted in the deaths of thousands of people, mostly poor and marginalized communities, who were victims of extrajudicial killings.

The ICC's investigation has focused on the period from July 1, 2016, to March 16, 2019, when Duterte was the country's president.

The ruling is expected to be delivered at 2:30 pm Manila time (0630 GMT).

Author's note: The ICC's ruling on Rodrigo Duterte's drug war is a significant development in the Philippines, highlighting the country's failure to uphold human rights and international law.
