One minute after midnight, on January 24, 2023, the Doomsday Clock was set at 90 seconds. This was the closest it has ever been to midnight, surpassing the 2-minute mark set in 1953 during the Cold War.
The clock is set annually by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, a non-profit organization that aims to inform the public about threats to humanity.
“The probability of a global catastrophe is higher now than at any point in the past 12,000 years,” said Dr. Rachel Bronson, Bulletin president and CEO.
The current proximity to midnight is due to the increasing threat of nuclear war, as well as the growing impact of climate change. The Bulletin also cites the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, which has heightened tensions between nuclear-armed states.
The Doomsday Clock has been a symbol of the threat of nuclear war since its creation in 1947. The clock's hands are set by the Bulletin's Science and Security Board, which considers factors such as the threat of nuclear war, climate change, and emerging technologies.
“The clock is a call to action,” said Dr. Bronson. “We must work together to address the threats facing humanity and prevent a global catastrophe.”
The Bulletin's message is clear: the threat of nuclear war, climate change, and emerging technologies is real and pressing. The Doomsday Clock serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing these threats and working together to prevent a global catastrophe.
