Biography
John Glenn, a former U.S. Marine Corps pilot, was the first American to orbit the Earth in 1962. He spent nearly 5 hours in space, at an altitude of 162 miles.

- February 20, 1962: Flew aboard Friendship 7 on the first American orbital spaceflight.
- October 3, 1998: Aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery on the STS-95 mission.
