Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment feels like Tears of Kingdom fan fiction designed for adrenaline junkies. Despite its formulaic story and gameplay, solid co-op modes and striking visuals help it stand out.
The game, released Thursday, is far from subtle. Players navigate predictable plotlines paired with impressive animation. Though I’ve never been drawn to “musou” style games before, this one refreshes my exhausted mind like a cool breeze.
The Legend of Zelda series, especially on Nintendo Switch, is celebrated for blending exploration, puzzles, and combat. However, the Hyrule Warriors spinoffs focus solely on action, amplifying it with intense battles and flashy special moves.
They sacrifice much of the thoughtful elements the franchise is known for, opting instead for bombastic fighting experiences.
For a new parent like me, Age of Imprisonment fits seamlessly into short, sleep-deprived gaming sessions. Four-to-twenty-minute battles are easier to manage than more demanding titles like Hollow Knight: Silksong.
Don’t expect deep storytelling or surprises here. The gameplay resembles the horde-smashing fun of games like Vampire Survivors more than the classic Zelda adventures.
“Age of Imprisonment may as well be fan fiction.”
Its appeal lies in straightforward, cathartic action rather than narrative innovation or complexity.
This spinoff offers enjoyable, fast-paced battles and style over depth, making it perfect for brief, casual play but lacking the rich exploration fans expect from Zelda.
