Today marks the 40th anniversary of the inaugural Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix held on the streets of Adelaide. The event welcomed F1 to Australia for the first time, with the iconic Adelaide Street Circuit making an immediate impact on the racing world.
More than 200,000 fans packed the streets, setting a record crowd to witness Keke Rosberg's victory for Williams. The atmosphere in Adelaide was electric, making the race a memorable milestone.
“If I may say on behalf of all the F1 drivers, Adelaide has done the best job in the world and to do it first time out is something else,” said Rosberg, who stood proudly atop the podium.
Rosberg’s win came despite injury; his knuckles were bandaged, evidence of the tough fight he endured throughout the race. The competition kicked off intensely as Nigel Mansell quickly took the lead from pole-sitter Ayrton Senna at the start.
Senna challenged Mansell at turn 5, near East Terrace, with both drivers running side by side. This wheel-to-wheel battle caused Mansell to lose the lead after running off track, allowing Rosberg to surge from third position to first.
Rosberg's resilience and Adelaide's superb hosting made this first Australian GP a standout event remembered by fans and drivers alike.
