On Sunday night, a grass fire broke out on Centennial Marine Drive, likely caused by fireworks. Gisborne firefighters reported only one fireworks-related callout during the first night of the Guy Fawkes season, marking a relatively calm start to the celebrations.
“We got called to a small vegetation fire along Centennial Marine Drive at around 9.30pm Sunday night,” said a senior station officer. “There were spent fireworks lying about, and it appeared to have been fireworks-related.”
The fire affected an area approximately 10 metres by 30 metres. Two fire appliances responded to the incident, located about halfway along the 'Mad Mile.'
“It was our only fireworks-type call that night, and we hope the good behaviour with crackers continues over the rest of the season this week,” added the senior officer.
Fireworks went on sale nationwide for the first time on Sunday. Fire and Emergency NZ has urged the public to use fireworks safely, considering the impact on people, pets, and the environment.
“We encourage everyone to be mindful when letting off fireworks to ensure safety for all,” Fire and Emergency NZ stated last week.
The Guy Fawkes season in Gisborne began quietly with a single fireworks-related grass fire, highlighting the importance of safe fireworks use during the celebrations.
