Delmar Place Apartments, a new complex dedicated to low-income seniors and disabled veterans, officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony held on Thursday. Located at 2125 Clinton Parkway, just across from Clinton Place Apartments, the complex is set to welcome its first residents in January.
The project aims to help the Lawrence-Douglas County Housing Authority accommodate over 30 people currently on the waiting list for affordable housing. Delmar Place is named in honor of Delmar Jackson, a maintenance employee of the housing authority, who was present at the opening event.
“I know you are all familiar with ‘A Place for Everyone,’ our county’s plan to end homelessness and expand affordable housing,” said County Commissioner Patrick Kelly. “It calls for adding 1,500 affordable renting units and at least 50 supportive units for adults 55 and over. And that need is real.”
Patrick Kelly emphasized that Delmar Place is more than just an apartment building; it represents a community-driven response to a pressing local challenge.
“Homelessness has a devastating social and economic impact on individuals and communities and it can strain public services,” noted Wallace Meyer Jr., chair of the Lawrence-Douglas County Board of Directors.
Delmar Place contributes to the ongoing efforts to provide safe and affordable housing solutions, helping to alleviate the strain homelessness places on public resources.
