Gisborne men rule the greens; Poverty Bay women fend off challenges

Gisborne men dominate the greens

At last weekend's Bowls Gisborne-East Coast senior interclub contests, Gisborne Bowling Club’s men showcased outstanding performance by winning the Fisken Cup on their home turf. They lost only one out of nine games, and that was by a single point in the pairs. Earning 16 points and a +96 differential, they confidently secured the title in just one day. Four teams participated in the men's competition.

Poverty Bay women defend Peck Shield amid stiff competition

The women of Poverty Bay Bowling Club retained the Peck Shield after intense battles with strong contenders Tolaga Bay and a fast-finishing Kahutia. Five teams competed for the women's title. Poverty Bay led by only one point after the first day and held their ground through challenging matches.

Key moment and team details

“Lesley Seymour’s 21-13 singles win against Kahutia’s Dayvinia Mills in the second round gave us the boost we needed to keep going on the first day,” said Poverty Bay’s Jessie Davis-Law.

The victorious Poverty Bay women’s senior interclub team included Deborah Hancock, Jessie Davis-Law, Jenny Amor (manager/reserve), Kathryn Flaugere, Cheryl Jenkins, Dianne Phillips, Lesley Seymour, and Anita Vaotuua.

Format challenges in competition

Unlike traditional matches where clubs face each other in singles, pairs, and fours sequentially, the games were mixed. This created complex scenarios for teams as they progressed through the rounds.

Summary

Gisborne men decisively won the Fisken Cup, while Poverty Bay women successfully defended the Peck Shield after a series of tough challenges and strategic plays.
