19-Year-Old College of Charleston Student Died by Suicide, Police Confirm

Owen Tillman Kenney, a 19-year-old student from the College of Charleston, disappeared near his home on Halloween and was later confirmed by police to have taken his own life. Authorities are currently searching for his body.

Last Known Whereabouts and Investigation

Kenney, originally from Tinton Falls, New Jersey, was last seen around 2 a.m. on October 31 near King Street and Burns Lane, just minutes from his house, according to his family and the Charleston Police Department.

Almost a week after his disappearance, police found video evidence showing Kenney walked onto the Ravenel Bridge pedestrian walkway above the Cooper River and took his own life.

“Our priority has always been and will remain Owen’s family. This is a real case involving a real family living through unimaginable pain, and they deserve compassion, privacy, and support from all of us,” said Chief Chito Walker.

Ongoing Search Efforts

Multiple agencies continue to search the Cooper River and nearby areas for Kenney's body. Among them are the Charleston Police Department’s Underwater Recovery Team, Harbor Patrol, and an Unmanned Aerial System Team. Federal, state, and local teams from New Jersey are also involved.
