Health experts are warning that thousands could die from flu this winter, prompting NHS leaders to issue an urgent "SOS" calling on the public to get vaccinated as soon as possible.
According to UK Health Security Agency data, England recorded 7,757 flu deaths last winter, compared to 3,555 the previous year. Child fatalities also rose from 34 to 53 cases.
“There is no doubt this winter will be one of the toughest our staff have ever faced,”
said Sir Jim Mackey, the NHS chief executive, referring to both the flu surge and upcoming doctor strikes.
Claire Nevinson, superintendent pharmacist at Boots, emphasized the importance of getting vaccinated early to protect against flu and curb the virus’s spread.
“Getting vaccinated is one of the best ways to protect yourself and others,”
she explained, advising eligible individuals to book NHS flu jab appointments soon. People not covered by the NHS can still get vaccinated privately.
This winter, the NHS faces mounting pressure as flu cases surge, prompting urgent calls for vaccination to prevent thousands of potential deaths.
