Stranger Things season 5 will conclude the series with a three-part final season, released over two months. The Duffer Brothers, creators of the show, explained that this approach allows the story's scope to expand significantly.
Ross Duffer shared in an interview with SFX Magazine that, unlike season 4, they planned the split this time. The pandemic forced season 4 to split unexpectedly, but for season 5, they designed Volume One to stand alone with its own climax.
"Volume One really exists as its own mega-movie. It has its own climax."
The fourth episode of season 5, which serves as the finale of Volume One, is described by Ross as technically the hardest episode they have ever made. He also noted the emotional difficulty of the actual finale episode.
"Episode four was the most challenging episode we've ever made, and that includes the finale – though on an emotional level, the finale was the hardest. I don't know how many days I found myself crying, and I'm not someone who cries very often outside of watching Pixar movies."
Author's summary: The Duffer Brothers explain the planned split of Stranger Things season 5 into three parts, highlighting Volume One as a standalone mega-movie with the season’s most technically challenging episode.
