Emory University Changes Commencement Venue
The Emory Wheel, Emory University's independent student newspaper since 1919, reports that after 40 years of hosting Commencement ceremonies on the campus Quadrangle, the University will move future graduation events to the Gas South District Arena and Convention Center in Duluth, Georgia.
Details on the New Location
The arena is located about 30 minutes northeast of Emory's Atlanta campus. This change applies to the University-wide Commencement ceremony, bachelor's degree diploma ceremonies, and large graduate and professional ceremonies.
Recent Venue Adjustments
- In 2023, due to forecasted severe weather, the University-wide ceremony was held at the George W. Woodruff Physical Education Center (WoodPEC).
- Smaller ceremonies were moved to various indoor campus locations.
- Capacity limits at WoodPEC allowed only Bachelor of Arts graduates to attend the main Commencement in person.
- The 2023 keynote address was delivered by Usher Raymond IV.
- In 2024, several Commencement ceremonies were moved to Gas South following a week of campus unrest.
