Former UK MP Tom Hunt observes a growing surge of populism reminiscent of Reform UK's rise, posing a challenge to the traditional strongholds of the Coalition and Labor in Australia.
During his recent visit, Hunt engaged with right-wing political figures and everyday Australians to gauge their perspectives on the country's political future. While not an expert on Australian politics, he noted a palpable nervousness within the Liberal-National Coalition about global political shifts, especially concerning developments in the UK.
Reports from The Spectator UK indicate that several former Australian politicians are currently in Britain assisting the Conservative Party amid its struggle to survive. There is a growing awareness among Australian conservatives about the potential consequences if Reform UK replaces the Conservatives as the primary right-wing party in Britain.
"They’re acutely aware of the ramifications for the Liberal-National Coalition – particularly the Liberal Party – if the Conservatives are effectively replaced by Reform UK on the right of British politics."
Some members on the right within the Coalition seek to take proactive measures to avoid being overtaken by a populist movement, as has happened to the British Conservatives. However, the Liberal Party remains divided on how best to respond to this global right-wing reshaping.
"Yet, like their UK counterparts, the Liberal Party seems split down the middle about how to respond to the global right-wing realignment."
The Australian political landscape faces fresh challenges as populist movements gain momentum, stirring strategic uncertainty within mainstream parties cautious of repeating the UK’s Conservative Party experience.
