Mozambique’s New Generation Begins Journey to Los Angeles 2028 in Adelaide

As the countdown to the 2025 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships begins, Mozambique is ready to make a significant impact on the global stage. The event will take place at The Drive and Pinky Flat/Tarntanya Wama, in the heart of Adelaide, Australia, where Mozambique will be represented by both men's and women's teams.

The nation’s pursuit of Olympic qualification has been a close battle. Mozambique narrowly missed out on the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Games, falling just short in the African beach volleyball Olympic qualifiers. Despite these setbacks, Mozambique returns to the World Championships this year with a fresh vision for their sport’s future.

Coaching Leadership and Vision

Head coach Han Abbing aims to achieve what his predecessor, Brazilian Alexandre Pontel, could not—securing Mozambique’s spot at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. The Dutch coach manages both the senior men’s and women’s national teams as part of the Volleyball Empowerment programme, a two-year Coach Support project valued at $336,000 USD.

Team Transformation

Abbing has implemented numerous changes to the national squad. Established players like Ainadino Martinho, Jorge Monjane, and Ana Sinaportar have made way for emerging talent, signaling a new era for Mozambique beach volleyball.

"Mozambique’s quest for an appearance at the Olympic Games has always been a case of so close yet so far."
"Head coach Han Abbing will be looking to succeed where his predecessor, Brazilian Alexandre Pontel, failed by qualifying Mozambique to the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028."

Summary: Mozambique is embracing a new era in beach volleyball under coach Han Abbing, aiming to break past near-misses and secure a place at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics through strategic team renewal and dedicated support programs.
