For Generations to Come: Tomorrow’s Supply Chains

At Huawei’s forum in Dongguan, China, IRU presented its vision for future supply chains that are not only efficient and reliable but also sustainable. The 7th Huawei Digital Supply Chain Forum examined recent changes influencing global supply chains and strategies for their development to benefit economies, communities, and people worldwide.

Keynote by IRU Secretary General Umberto de Pretto

“Today, we find ourselves in a world marked by rapid transformation and constant change. As the world becomes ever more interconnected, the need for collaboration, innovation and shared standards in logistics has never been greater. The Belt and Road routes are now a tangible reality. We see trucks traversing these routes, connecting continents and markets as never before.”

Impact of the Global TIR Transit System

The global TIR transit system has played a vital role in activating Belt and Road corridors. A pilot transport operation last year by a Chinese operator in partnership with Huawei demonstrated the system’s efficiency. Using TIR, a 6,500-kilometre journey was reduced from 20 days to just 7 days, creating a strategic corridor for Huawei and other manufacturers.

Challenges Facing Global Supply Chains

While these new connections offer significant opportunities, global supply chains are still confronting major challenges, especially amid ongoing geopolitical uncertainty. This is particularly noticeable in Eurasian trade corridors, where recent geopolitical shifts have significantly changed trade volumes and routes.

Author’s summary: Innovations like the TIR system and enhanced cooperation are transforming global supply chains, yet geopolitical tensions continue to shape trade dynamics and future prospects.
