David Harewood’s Return as Othello
Nearly 30 years ago, David Harewood made history as the first Black actor to portray Othello at the National Theatre. He has now reprised the role of the Moorish general, whose trust in the deceitful Iago leads to tragic downfall.
“I played the part ‘balling and screaming’ with rage – responding to claims of Desdemona’s infidelity and his former lieutenant’s treachery as many young men would,” Harewood reflected about his 1997 performance.
In this current production, Harewood initially presents Othello as a seasoned man, tempered by wisdom. However, he soon transforms into a fierce, impulsive figure, consumed by Iago’s manipulations and unable to recognize the true nature of those around him.
