PlayStation is finally offering cloud gaming — but they're sorta charging you for it - The Escapist

PlayStation Portal Adds Cloud Gaming with Subscription

The PlayStation Portal, a handheld console that has largely flown under the radar, is gaining cloud gaming capabilities. Sony aims to enhance the device by allowing users to stream games from the cloud, expanding its functionality beyond merely streaming from a PlayStation 5 console.

Background on PlayStation Portal

The Portal requires ownership of a PlayStation 5 and streams games from it, making it not a fully standalone device. By last summer, only 3% of PlayStation 5 owners had purchased the Portal.

New Cloud Gaming Feature

Sony recently announced that PlayStation Portal users can now access cloud gaming, including streaming select digital PS5 games from their own library. This can be done through PlayStation Plus cloud streaming without the need to connect directly to a console.

Subscription Requirement

Access to cloud gaming on the Portal requires a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription, Sony’s top tier priced at $17.99 per month or $159.99 annually. This means users must pay for the highest subscription level to use the new cloud streaming feature.

"PlayStation Portal owners can only access cloud gaming if they have a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription — Sony’s highest subscription tier that’s $17.99 a month (or $159.99 a year)."

For existing Premium subscribers, this update significantly improves the Portal, giving it value beyond being just a glorified screen.

Context in Handheld Gaming

The Portal’s cloud gaming addition comes amid the success of the Steam Deck, which popularized playing PC games virtually anywhere—on planes, trains, or even in bathrooms. Sony’s move aims to compete by offering a similar freedom through streaming.

Summary: Sony enhances the PlayStation Portal by adding cloud gaming, but access is limited to PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers, turning the device into a more versatile streaming option for PS5 game owners.
