Despite Google’s Stadia fading away, cloud gaming continues to grow, and Sony is deepening its commitment through the PlayStation Portal handheld device. Unlike independent handhelds like the Steam Deck, the PlayStation Portal depends on streaming games from a PlayStation 5 console.
The key to enhancing the Portal’s usefulness has been cloud gaming. Starting today, Sony allows all PlayStation Portal users to stream select digital PS5 games from their own libraries without needing the PS5 console, opening the device to broader gameplay through the cloud.
"All PlayStation Portal owners will be able to use cloud gaming on the handheld, including access to select digital PS5 games from their own library without needing to connect to a PlayStation 5 via Remote Play."
This update marks a significant step for the PlayStation Portal, moving it from a mere streaming device tethered to a PS5 to a more flexible platform supported by cloud gaming technology.
Note: Access to this cloud gaming capability requires an $18/month subscription.
