Laura Marcus delivers a standout performance in the new Netflix political period thriller Death By Lightning, playing Mollie Garfield, the “smart as steel, very saucy” daughter of US President James A. Garfield.
The four-episode limited series, created by Mike Makowsky and directed by Matt Ross (Captain Fantastic), explores the true story of political turmoil in late 19th-century America. The show stars Michael Shannon as President Garfield, Matthew Macfadyen as assassin Charles J. Guiteau, along with Betty Gilpin and Nick Offerman.
The series is produced by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, known for their work on Game of Thrones, and portrays a divided United States leading to Garfield's assassination in 1881.
“There was something eerie about how much the present day seemed to echo the story we were filming,” Marcus reflects on playing the president's daughter during these politically charged times.
With Death By Lightning, Marcus cements her reputation as a compelling emerging talent in contemporary cinema.
