Those wishing to honour the sacrifice of New Zealanders who fought for their nation's freedom in the First World War are encouraged to gather on Armistice Day. The Howick Returned and Services Association (RSA) will hold a ceremony at the cenotaph on Stockade Hill next Tuesday, November 11.
Howick RSA president Barry Dreyer welcomes both association members and the public to attend. The gathering will begin at 10:45 a.m., with the service commencing at 11:00 a.m. featuring the playing of the Last Post.
“November 11 is Armistice Day, the day of remembrance for those killed and those damaged from World War I,” Dreyer explains.
Following the ceremony, RSA participants are invited to the Apothecary Café on Picton Street for refreshments and lunch at their own expense, with tables reserved for the group.
“We look forward to seeing you there for this important commemoration,” says Dreyer.
Armistice Day is marked annually with a minute’s silence at 11:11 a.m. on November 11, commemorating the signing of the armistice that ended World War I in 1918.
