The Edinburgh University and Colleges Union (UCU) will undertake six days of strike action during week 11 of this semester’s teaching schedule. This decision follows an eight-month dispute with the university regarding budget cuts and staff reductions.
In a UCU re-ballot, 86% of voting members supported the strike action. This marks the second ballot due to the ongoing strike lasting over six months.
“These days are in the last week of teaching in the semester, and members who have teaching responsibility clearly would prefer to be in the classroom with their students to wrap up their courses,” said Edinburgh UCU President Sophia Woodman.
“University management could resolve this dispute now, but so far, has not chosen to do so.”
The conflict began earlier this year after the university sent an email to staff in February, refusing to exclude compulsory redundancies as part of planned £140 million budget cuts.
Recently revealed, the university closed its Institute for Academic Development during the initial phase of budget cuts, resulting in compulsory redundancies for seven staff members.
This prolonged dispute between Edinburgh University and its UCU members highlights unresolved tensions over budget cuts, staffing, and the university's approach to its academic community.
