IonQ (NYSE: IONQ), together with a Swiss consortium of academic, enterprise, and public organizations, has launched the Geneva Quantum Network (GQN), the first dedicated citywide quantum network in Switzerland. This innovative network connects major institutions across Geneva using hundreds of kilometers of existing fiber optic cables.
The network relies on quantum key distribution (QKD) and quantum detection systems provided by ID Quantique (IDQ), a company owned by IonQ. This infrastructure enables advances in quantum cybersecurity, communications, and metrology research.
The launch is positioned as a significant step in deploying quantum technologies in real-world conditions, providing a large-scale experimental platform for quantum communication, metrology, and synchronization.
The GQN aims to foster practical applications of quantum technology by offering a citywide testbed. This will accelerate research and development in secure communications and precision measurement techniques using quantum principles.
Author's summary: The Geneva Quantum Network, launched by IonQ and Swiss partners, is a pioneering citywide quantum infrastructure designed to enhance quantum cybersecurity and research with an extensive fiber optic system.
