Karrueche Tran immersed herself in the world of Hip-Hop to prepare for her latest role in Lifetime’s upcoming film Terry McMillan Presents: Preach, Pray, Love, which premiered on Saturday, November 8. To deliver an authentic performance, she studied Brooklyn rapper Lola Brooke and drew inspiration from her raw energy and street confidence.
Tran plays Charlisa “Charlie” Jones, a platinum-selling rapper marked by a turbulent past and a sharp edge. The actress shared how portraying the character required a complete transformation and deep preparation.
“I’m not musically inclined in any way, but it was a great challenge. I studied a rapper named Lola Brooke, I prepared myself, and I did it. I think I did a pretty decent job!”
The film follows Charlie’s journey after being released from prison. She must perform community service under the supervision of Pastor Kyrus Owens, played by Mark J.P. Their contrasting worlds — her street-smart resilience and his spiritual dedication — form the emotional center of the story.
Beyond mastering the role, Tran discovered a deeper confidence in her own abilities.
“I learned that I can do anything I put my mind to. I was anxious because I wanted to do the character justice — but once I focused, I realized you can do anything when you really go for it.”
The movie features an ensemble cast including Tobias Truvillion, B. Simone, Reginae Carter, and Da Brat. It is directed by acclaimed author Terry McMillan, known for Waiting to Exhale and How Stella Got Her Groove Back.
Karrueche Tran’s dedication to studying Lola Brooke brought authenticity to her portrayal of a complex rapper, blending grit with personal growth in Lifetime’s latest drama.
