Paul Kelly has released a new album titled Seventy in his landmark year. The record reflects a deep contemplation of a life well lived while continuing Kelly's fearless exploration of the human experience, according to a press release.
The album includes the memorable single Rita Wrote a Letter, which continues the narrative from Kelly’s 1996 classic How to Make Gravy. This time, the story unfolds from Rita’s perspective, with Joe’s voice still heard from beyond. Kelly explained,
“I’ve been mulling over the idea of a sequel to ‘How to Make Gravy’ from Rita’s point of view for quite some time. About five years ago I wrote down the words, ‘Rita wrote a letter,’ and thought, ‘There’s my title.’”
The lyrics display Kelly’s signature mix of humor and depth:
“Rita wrote a letter / One you don’t want to get from your wife / When Rita writes a letter / The pen is sharper than the knife.”
Another new single, Happy Birthday Ada Mae, was released alongside a tender music video directed by Kelly’s daughter, Maddy Kelly. The video stars his two-year-old granddaughter, Ada Mae, and offers a moving meditation on love and legacy. Kelly reflects on the song’s message:
“In the end, love is all of us that remains. It’s a joy working with my daughter and granddaughter.”
Summary: Paul Kelly’s album Seventy blends personal storytelling and emotional depth, marked by family collaboration and reflective themes on life and love.
