Health officials warn that the UK is facing one of its toughest winters ever for the National Health Service (NHS), with hospitals at full capacity and long patient waits expected.
Sir Jim Mackey, NHS England chief executive, stated there is “no doubt” this winter will be exceptionally challenging for healthcare services. Last winter, England recorded 7,757 flu-related deaths, more than double the 3,555 deaths the previous year. Child deaths due to flu also increased from 34 to 53.
England's chief nurse has launched an urgent “flu jab SOS,” encouraging people to get vaccinated to prevent severe illness. This call comes just days before resident doctors in England plan a five-day strike, adding further pressure on already strained NHS services.
