Leighton Meester stars as Alyssa, a typical LA publicist and Maia's boss in the HBO series I Love LA. While her role doesn't reflect her personal publicist experiences, the show’s portrayal of workplace dynamics resonated deeply with her.
During an interview, Meester opened up about encountering toxic work environments earlier in her career. She commented on the difficult relationship between her character Alyssa and Maia, played by Rachel Sennott:
"I've been in toxic work environments. I think that a lot of people have experienced that, being around people who sort of... I don't know, just, like, you have a boss that maybe doesn't uplift you, or whatever."
Meester was interviewed alongside co-star Josh Hutcherson, who expressed surprise at her revelations. He asked, "In this industry, that's happened to you?" Meester replied, "It's shocking." She reflected on the relief of working in a supportive setting:
"It was really fun to play with [the toxic dynamic] in a safe, comedic environment."
This safe atmosphere allowed her to embrace the role and enjoy the journey fully.
Leighton Meester found working on I Love LA refreshing, as it let her explore challenging workplace themes within a safe and comedic context.
