Aargau, Switzerland publishes online geothermal suitability map

Online Geothermal Suitability Map Released in Aargau, Switzerland

The Canton of Aargau in Switzerland has launched an online suitability map highlighting various geothermal energy applications. This map serves as a strategic tool to guide investments and project planning, fostering the targeted development of geothermal energy across the region.

Geothermal energy, particularly through shallow heat extraction using ground source heat pumps, already plays a crucial role in sustainable energy supply and the effort to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Government Initiative and Research Efforts

Recognizing Aargau's favorable geothermal conditions, the Cantonal Government responded to a motion passed by the Grand Council in March 2022. The motion requested the creation of a geothermal register to map the potential across municipalities.

Following this, the Energy Division of the Department of Construction, Transport and Environment, together with internal and external experts, carried out an in-depth study to assess the canton's geothermal resources.

The Canton of Aargau “has favorable conditions for geothermal energy,” and the government is committed to promoting its strategic use.

Strategic Impact

The suitability map is an important step towards harnessing geothermal energy effectively within Aargau.

Author's summary: Aargau's new online geothermal map advances regional sustainable energy by guiding investments and maximizing local geothermal potential for carbon neutrality by 2050.
